Steve McLean is a comedian and writer from Scotland, currently living in London.

His trilogy of shows based on merchandise (Action Figure Archive, Action Figure Archive Volume 2 and Action Figure Archive Retrosexual) made multiple top ten lists and toured internationally.

His favourite Deep Purple album is Come Taste the Band. He knows this will win him no favours among the hardcore.

The New Deep Purple often performed on what were known to promoters as ‘soft seaters.’ These are events that would attract a generic crowd rather than a hardcore Deep Purple fan base. Things like County Fairs or Tractor Pull events. The name Deep Purple, regardless if it was prefixed with ‘New’ or ‘featuring Rod Evans’ would add a bit of gravitas to an otherwise local event.

At these kind of shows, the band would often perform well since the pressure was off and they didn’t need to overcome a hostile crowd of fans. Contrary to popular belief, not every show the New Deep Purple played was poor or ended in crowd trouble. A lot of people were entertained and enjoyed their shows.

This poster was very kindly sent to me by Norm from the Whiskey River band. They still perform today. https://whiskeyriverbandmn.com/meet-the-band
