Steve McLean is a comedian and writer from Scotland, currently living in London.

His trilogy of shows based on merchandise (Action Figure Archive, Action Figure Archive Volume 2 and Action Figure Archive Retrosexual) made multiple top ten lists and toured internationally.

His favourite Deep Purple album is Come Taste the Band. He knows this will win him no favours among the hardcore.

One of the reasons why The New Deep Purple were allowed to exist is that frankly, the industry didn’t really care who was in the band. When it became more widely known that Deep Purple weren’t in face Deep Purple, then there was a lot of ‘faux’ outrage from the venues and promoters. However, ultimately, the tickets selling was the main the concern.

I say this matter-of-factly because the amount of industry folks, who read the reports in the industry press, spoke to the other venue bookers and even saw the band first hand. To claim to be hoodwinked afterwards stinks of disingenuous or incompetence… both are entirely unbelievable.

Posted here is an advert from a legitimate agency claiming to have Deep Purple tickets for sell. Even if the band were pulling a con, by the 14th of August it was well known that the group on tour were Deep Purple featuring Rod Evans. While the general public may have been unaware, it would take a huge amount of naivety to believe that the music industry wasn’t… .
